Important news re: visas, domestic flights & the road to Ponta do Ouro

You have done Mozambique a great service with your guide and have shone light on a heretofore less known travel destination.

Some updates:

The new Maputo-Katembe Bridge was inaugurated on November 10 2018 and the accompanying road extension to Kosi Bay border point with KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is in very good condition, almost like tarmac. Driving time from Maputo to Kosi/Ponta do Ouro is thus reduced from more than 5 hours to less than 2 hours. See https://www.iol.co.za/business-report/economy/new-maputo-bridge-opens-up-a-whole-range-of-opportunities-18145350

All Mozambique tourist visas can be used for two entries. Makes it ideal for a quick crossing to eSwatini (Swaziland) or Malawi.

Ethiopian Airlines and FastJet now operate both international and domestic routes within Mozambique. AS of 1 December 2018, Ethiopian Airlines is serving 8 domestic airports i.e. Maputo, Nampula, Tete, Pemba, Beira, Nacala, Quelimane and Chimoio. New post bus service on major routes through Mozambique

Thanks to Sean Connolly for the following key update:

Correios de Moçambique recently launched an inter-provincial bus service called the “Post Bus”:

Looks like the routes are:

Maputo-Beira
Maputo-Quelimane
Beira-Chimoio-Tete
Beira-Quelimane
Quelimane-Nampula
Nampula-Pemba
Nacala-Pemba

(sources seem to vary as to whether or not Nacala is actually served or not)
Couldn’t find a schedule online but a few runs/week seems likely. The buses are newly imported from SA & look to be of a much higher standard than the rattletrap Maningue Nice/Nagi Nagi buses.

You buy tickets at the post offices (easy!) & the info line is 84 312 3102, which I got from this excellent & informative blog post (which also says TCO/Oliviera is out of business):

Crossing from Malawi to Tete

The best and safest way to cross from Malawi to Tete is to take a bus from Blantyre to Harare (maybe “Flying Horses” from the Central Bus Station) – you have to pay for the whole trip, but it will be a comfortable one, and the bus stops in Tete, where you can disembark!

Ideally, get your Mozambican visa in Lilongwe, as it’s much easier than to buy it on the border. On the border, it can be that they want to see your Yellow Fever Vaccination! Don’t forget it!

In Tete you will find several options (TCO, LTM) for buses to Chimoio, Beira etc
